Shiatsu is a Japanese word meaning “shi” finger and “atsu” pressure – healing with hands.

It is a system of healing based on the principle that our health is dependent on the balanced functioning of our body’s life energy, qi (pronounced chee). Qi flows through the body, concentrated in meridians/channels beneath the skin. When there is an imbalance of qi the body sends out distress signals such as:

  • headaches

  • neck and shoulder pain

  • back pain

  • PMS and menstrual difficulties

  • digestive problems

  • stress

  • fatigue

  • depression

Symptoms such as these indicate that qi must be rebalanced to restore health.
